In September 2025, Hazeltree hosted an invitation-only roundtable in London, bringing together treasury and operations leaders from some of the world’s leading hedge funds. The discussion centered on current challenges and emerging best practices in treasury operations, and how technology can serve as both a strategic and operational advantage.

The treasury function is evolving rapidly, yet many funds still face significant obstacles when it comes to visibility, efficiency, and cohesion. At a recent industry discussion, we explored the current state of treasury operations, the challenges firms encounter, and how new solutions are setting a path toward greater transparency and value creation.

The Visibility Challenge

A consistent theme was the lack of visibility across key treasury areas. Too often, funds are operating with fragmented systems—one platform for liquidity, another for margin, another for payments. This patchwork of tools creates blind spots that make it difficult to obtain a centralized view of risk, cash positions, and financing activity. For treasurers, the absence of a single source of truth not only increases operational complexity but also hampers strategic decision-making.

Fragmented Supplier Landscape

Underlying this visibility issue is a highly fragmented supplier landscape. Multiple vendors deliver point solutions for different pieces of the puzzle, resulting in overlapping contracts, disparate support agreements, and higher costs. Most importantly, the lack of cohesion across tools creates inefficiencies at a time when firms need tighter control.

Hazeltree is addressing this directly. Through both product development and the recent acquisition of Siman Systems, Hazeltree is building a unified treasury platform that integrates margin and financing, collateral management, liquidity, cash and payments, and automation, all within a single ecosystem. This approach reduces complexity, improves workflow, and gives treasurers the ability to execute seamlessly across functions.

Multi-Manager Funds: A Case for Customization

Multi-manager funds, or "pod shops," have unique treasury requirements, and their proactive management tasks differ widely from those of other fund structures. During our discussion, participants highlighted the need for more tailored solutions. Hazeltree’s customizable offerings, including cost and capital attribution methodologies, are designed specifically with these firms in mind. By aligning treasury functionality to the realities of multi-manager operations, firms can achieve sharper transparency and greater operational efficiency.

Margin Replication and Optimization

The acquisition of Siman Systems has brought precise prime broker and exchange margin replication into Hazeltree’s platform. This capability enables firms to model, replicate, and analyze margin requirements both before and after trades. Armed with this insight, treasurers can identify optimization opportunities, reduce financing costs, and improve capital efficiency. The ability to simulate and stress-test margin requirements is proving transformative for funds seeking to enhance performance without increasing risk.

Measuring and Demonstrating ROI

A final point of discussion was how treasurers demonstrate value to the wider firm. Attribution models and task/rate trackers are becoming indispensable tools for quantifying savings and identifying return enhancement opportunities. By tying treasury actions directly to fund performance, treasurers can showcase their contribution not only to cost savings but also to alpha generation. At Hazeltree, we are actively developing ways to help firms surface and present these insights more clearly, and we will be hosting a dedicated session to showcase this functionality in action.

The Way Forward

The future of treasury management lies in unifying fragmented processes, enabling transparency, and providing treasurers with the tools to drive real value. At Hazeltree, our mission is to deliver that future—helping funds move from complexity to clarity, and from operational necessity to strategic advantage.
